"THE HUMP"
"Effective immediately, there will be no
more weather over the HUMP."
- Col. Tom Hardin, USAAF
During World War II, there existed a theater of
operation where successful completion of the mission was considered by many to be
absolutely critical to the successful prosecution of the war in the Pacific. Yet,
this theater was always at the bottom of the list for allocation of resources and
supplies. The operation lasted from 1942 until the end of the war, and kept over 1.2
million Japanese soldiers occupied in China that could have been in the Pacific islands.
The closing of the Burma road left only one supply route open to supply the Chinese
and American troops fighting on the Chinese mainland . . . the air route from the Assam
valley in India over the Himalaya mountains into China. This route became known as
"THE HUMP".

The above quote from Col. Hardin is in all
probability not entirely accurate. But you get the point.
