Stories From the HUMP

Just before Christmas, 1997, I received a present from the CBI-HPA. It was a letter granting me permission to use copyrighted material from their books on the hump operation China Airlift - The Hump volumes one and two. Also included was permission from Turner Publishing of Paducah, Ky. to use similar material from volumes three and four of the same named publication.

This was very good news for me, because I have long felt that I could not adequately relate the stories and experiences of the HUMP pilots and flight crews. With the above permissions, I can now let the men who experienced the HUMP tell you about their life in their own words. The following stories and pictures have been taken verbatim from accounts published in China Airlift - The HUMP Volumes 1 through 4  as well as other books, and from personal interviews and accounts sent to me.

I now invite you to experience the HUMP through the words and pictures of those who were there. Enjoy and reflect on their sacrifices.

Editorial note: Some of the language contained in the stories and poems contained herein is quite "colorful" and may not be "politically correct" by todays standards. They have been copied exactly as written. Keep in mind that this is the way things were in the 1940's and in no way reflects any bias or bigotry on the part of the author of this web site.

ENJOY.

A Brief History of the Gurkhas of Nepal

What you are about to read here was written by a man who was not a

Hump Pilot or member of an air crew who flew the Hump.  However,

besides being my very dear friend, he is a Gurkha, and I felt obliged to

include this on this page.  It may give you a better understanding of

who the Gurkhas are, their history, and cultural background.  These

were the guys that kept the bases secure.
